On Saturday,
January 28, 2018 two rookie FIRST Tech Challenge robotics teams (sponsored by
the Girl Scouts) from Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy competed in the
Central League Championship. Team 9141,
the Robois, won 1st place Motivate Award, 2nd place
Connect Award and 3rd place Design Award. Team 11291, Fe-males, won
1st place Connect Award and 2nd place Motivate Award. Sasha S., a sophomore on Team 9141 (Robois), comments:
“I think my interest was sparked when building and coding our
robot. I loved seeing something you worked so hard on come to life!” The team
names Robois (prounouced “ro-boys”) and Fe-males (Fe as in the chemical symbol
for Iron) were a play on gender norms for robotics, the students
wanted to send a message that robotics can be valuable to both women and men,
and that participation in robotics would make them into stronger women.
