YWCPA IPAA/PESA October 2013 update
by Paige Moore, Isabel Morales and Byaombe Salome

With the help of the IPAA/PESA, we’ve had amazing opportunities such as guest speakers, summer experiences, and field trips. These opportunities have given the girls at YWCPA a diverse and unique experience that not many students receive.  While some of us had a summer experience at the DIVE camp at UT Tyler, others were granted an amazing opportunity for an internship by the University of Houston. By attending IPAA/PESA activities, as a whole, sophomores have made great successes! Starting as freshmen, we didn’t know what was going to be ahead of us. Participating in the DIVE Camp at UT Tyler gave us a great outlook of what was to come. Our guest speaker topics for sophomores have included an “Introduction to the Energy Industry” from Pavitra Timbalia and ”Working in a Male Dominated Profession” by Tesia Albarado. The Juniors have heard from geologists Letha Slagle and Dr. Kim Manzano. We have also had several field trips. We visited the Society of Exploration Geophysicists Conference, the Vex Robotics Kickoff, 3DCAMP and we are looking forward to visiting Core Laboratories.
During these field trips, we have received excellent engineering education related experiences. Through  these field trips and guest speakers, we have been provided with knowledge of various engineering fields. As teens, we love the fun and exciting opportunities because we love having fun and learning at the same time! Also, we love these activities sponsored by IPAA/PESA because they give us reasons to become female engineers. IPAA/PESA has showed us that the engineering field does not have to remain a male dominated field. IPAA/PESA showed us how we can be successful female engineers. We, as females, should stand up and make a difference in the world. We would like to GREATLY thank IPAA/PESA for these opportunities. We have gained new perspectives, fun experiences, knowledge, and many goals to achieve as we grow into adults. Thank you IPAA for what you have done and continue to inspire greatness in young people.
